Janice Bastani
Today, as I was reading a morning spiritual uplifting piece, it occurred to me that there are many of you out there who are sitting on the bench with a "wealth" of talent, a "wealth" of skill, and an enormous amount of intellect who are just waiting for something to happen. It is as if you are waiting for the "coach" to put you in the game.

If you are sitting there on the bench, I would greatly encourage you to get in the game yourself and start by forming your own team of individuals who can become a large mastermind team. Advertise by posting a flier or card in your local YMCA, or coffee shop or library or online in a couple of places and just set a meeting time and date at a local coffee shop or diner and go and see who shows up. You might be pleasantly surprised! Bring along a business book or magazine that is on the topic which you are interested in and make a list of suggestions as to things you could discuss or how you could pool you collective "time resources" and do some leg work to finding out where some jobs are in your area. Agree to meet back in a week at a time and place which is local to everyone who came that day. Encourage everyone to bring one more person the next time. Have a way to collect everyone's contact information.

I would encourage you to get out there and to start "Mentoring" someone who is just a couple of years behind you in the world of business. You already hold a wealth of knowledge from the years that you have worked. There are thousands of college kids who will graduate with no job offers once they move back home. What a perfect audience hungry for information.

Here's another idea: LISTEN where EMPLOYERS are talking. Where do you think that is?

Remember here, the idea is not to get bogged down in discouragement and mire of not having. It is all about making the most of the time that you have at this moment to facilitate change, and sometimes that is in your own life first.
There are a couple of things that immediately come to mind.

YEA!!!!! No School (kids mind)
OH NO!!!! No School (parent's mind)

GREAT!! Leave work at noon (worker's mind)
OH Yeh?! No work no pay (worker's mind)

Snowed In, a time to kick back and have a nice meal, play with the kids, watch a favorite movie, sleep in.
or
Shovel the walks, the driveway, we're out of groceries and the road is bad and the grocery has closed early.

"In your weather forecast today...more snow....." "Are you kidding me....I can't take any more snow!
"you know it is winter and this is February....this is what "WINTER" is all about.

Each one of these statements comes from two distinct places.

One is very Anabolic, meaning it is positive, light hearted and the person most likely is enjoying what is going on outside their window.

The other is very Catabolic, meaning it is negative and the person only sees the down side to what is going on outside their window.

Where are you on this snowy day?

As I drove down the interstate and I saw pairs of head lights after pairs of head lights I wondered if the people behind the wheel actually knew how fortunate they were to be driving home from a job. Then I thought, I believe I will just offer up a prayer to each driver to be aware that he or she is very blessed to be able to drive home from a job. Blessed that they have gas in that car. Blessed that they have a car to drive.

Suddenly, the lights seem to soften from the glare that they had been only a moment before. I felt much lighter and I noticed I was smiling and singing along with the radio.

Counting your own blessings daily is a very positive experience and way to live. It is doubled when you pass the blessing on to others.

Try it and see what happens!

I sure do and I still actually have that book in my library. Do you know that the content is still valid today some 40 years later!? Now that's a book that can stand the test of time!

What was going on in your life where you thought....hum....I have no clue how to accomplish that...I need some help...."? Today, you can quickly go to the internet, but the 100% probability that you will become distracted and be all over the place and forget what you were orginally there for is huge!

This type of activity can be very negative and over whelm is sure to set in. In Energy coaching, we call that "Catabolic". We call it that because this does not move you forward. Moving forward is what you are looking for and the coach is looking for.

A coach is a person who is in the business of lifting up other people and pointing them through questions to the path that they are looking for. The client (we coaches have found out) is very smart and they need just a little probing in order to find that answer or direction that they were searching for in the self-help industry.

Here's what I am talking about. Let's use me and my first experience. I was a newlywed and suddenly the lovely diamond ring came with a truck load of responsibility that although it was lofty and seemed wonderful was actually daunting. I suddenly had, a home, all his stuff, all of my stuff, a job, his job, our cars, meals, laundry, bills, habits, gifts (the good, the bad and the downright ugly) to deal with, and all of the other mirad of things that go with combining two lives and two households.

I need "ORGANIZATION" help. A book has to be read and digested and then tasks need to be done. In coaching the coach is your helper so to speak. The coach helps you break down the mountain and prioritize the what gets done first and then the second thing, then the third thing and so on. Along with that breakdown and prioritizing comes encouragement, venting, feelings expressed, congratulations and a partner to walk up that mountain until it is just a small bump in the road.

Stress disappears when you share it with someone who is not emotionally attached to the outcome of the project at hand.

What is you mountain?
Who is your coach?
If you are interested in exploring what engaging a coach is like; I would be happy to speak with you at no charge.
Your mountain isn't going away anytime soon.
It's only a phone call....you have no obligation what so ever.

What is that for you?

Did you ever notice that somewhere around December 30th or 31st, you just pack it all in and mentally throw in the towel, because you know....Time Is Up?

Or perhaps you recite that famous line from the Christmas Poem..."...settled down for a long winter's nap..."?

The next time you open your eyes it is a fresh, clean, sparkling, new, year and anything is possible. It is possible until you put your feet on the floor next to your bed that is.

If you are a person who really buys in to the whole "resolutions" idea then get out or take down your list. Look at it and see how you did in week 52.

If you think about it these resolutions are much like a 52 week marketing calendar in a business. You start out with a big piture plan. You know, your idea of what it is that you want. I know you did do that part this past 9 days.

Next you take the number ONE item on your list and you break it down into 52 easy bite sized steps that are doable and spread them out over 52 weeks. Now if you are pushing back about this one thing, guess what....you are in a negative living mental space.

If you say..."that's way too long, I don't need 52 weeks to do that!" I challenge you to drag the steps out anyway and do not skip a week.

Now when it is December 30th or 31st of 2010.....pull down your list and just see if you actually did accomplish the number 1 items on your list. That would be a totally ANABOLIC - POSITIVE 2010!

You see 99% of all of us that make resolutions never get to week 49 (for those of you who don't know when that is....it is January 31st).

If you feel extra ambitious you can do this say thing with all of the items on your list. A word of warning here....you will quickly become overwhelmed and toss the whole thing out! That would be a CATABOLIC - NEGATIVE thing and you are right back where you were on December 30th or 31st 2009.

Long ago, I must admit I gave up the notion of having New Years Resolutions as a kid. Somehow it seems false and so fake to pretend that I was going to; read more, study harder, get on the cheerleading squad, make the basketball team or have that perfect dress for the prom. They all seems false and truly out of reach.

So, what I have come to terms with is just moving 1 to 10 degrees closer to the kind of person I want to be.

You may ask, what does that mean?

It simply means this:

I try to listen more than I talk.
I actively try to put myself in the other person's shoes/walk and see things from their perspective
I develop my own intellect by reading the things that I love to read on the topics that intrigue me
I am grateful for all of the opportunities and things that I do have
I talk to God every day
I help others as much as they will allow me to help
I speak the love language of those that I love and care about and those who are my clients
I am at peace about who I am in this world and the part that I play in it.

These 8 things are not earth shattering by any strech of the imagination nor are they the same for any other person on earth. They are however, doable every single day and all 52 weeks of my year. Each of us is in a different season in our lives, and what we see through those seasons of experience has so much wisdom which is been painfully and joyfully learned that we can pass that wisdom along through our actions and our words when we intereact with others.

What about you?

2010 “None of us is promised tomorrow”

As I write this I am reminded that each of our lives is like vapor, it appears for a little while and then vanishes away. What is motivating you this year?

In December 2009, I was on my MasterMind call and we were all talking about our plans and motivations for 2010. As we talked our fearless leader came up with a list of the items that we had just laid out for the New Year. I began to rewrite my notes in the dark of night and I saw a beautiful way to incorporate some of those ideas here for you. Read them and decide for yourself where you are headed in 2010.

1.	Be Grateful
2.	Maintain a positive attitude
3.	Give
4.	Terrific!
5.	Sit on a rock
6.	The gift that costs nothing
7.	Cut the Noise, Drama & Distraction
8.	Sit in Silence
9.	Listen twice as much as you talk
10.	Say Thank-you
11.	Find C-A-L-M
12.	One Minute times two
13.	Small Steps
14.	Sleep On It

Are you still with me? I would love to give you a brief insight into each one of these items because I know they will lift you up and will give you pause to rethink what you are currently doing and where you are going with a “full steam ahead” mentality. I would like to challenge that and take down a different track.

Be Grateful	Look around where you are currently sitting; name everything within sight that you currently have. I challenge you to each day to just keep a running list of “3” things that you are grateful for.

Maintain a positive attitude What do you get from seeing life from the negative side? Seeing things in the positive looks a whole lot better than always seeing what’s wrong. I challenge you to change your negativity to positivity.

Give	Have you ever been in a line and you got a nudge to pay for the person in front of you or behind you? I urge you to just do it and do not stop and think about why, or guilt or anything else, just do it. When others are struggling you can often see it right in front of your eyes, but we tend to see past them. I challenge you to give and give more freely and more abundantly.

Terrific!	Many of us come “preprogrammed” to “FIX-IT”. So in order to use this gift and strength more, I would like to challenge you to the following; the next time you are about to get “engaged” in a heated battle of the “problem”, turn it around and yell “TERRIFIC!”. We are here to solve problems, let’s get started!

Sit on a rock	Our lives are filled with going, going, going; so go already, but take only your suitcase and a blank pad and pen. Take a ride on a train a couple of hours one way and then come back. Let the sound of the train and the scenery outside the window carry your thoughts and empty your mind and see what you write down on the way home.

The gift that costs nothing	Give yourself a gift everyday. Step outside and drink in the sights, the sounds and the weather. The gift of swaying trees in the breeze, the gift of birds singing and flying through the air, children laughing, a beautiful flower, the rain, the glistening snow, the sound of the surf. These are free and all around us, receive them.

Cut the Noise, Drama, & Distraction	These three are some of the biggest stressors and energy drainers known to humans. Turn off the news, get a new circle of friends that are positive, you are no better or worse than any of those you know, and stop running to and fro from unpleasantness. Face these head on and plow through.

Sit in Silence I challenge you to go to a chair and sit there in utter silence for 5 minutes. Set a timer, turn off everything, close your eyes and sit there. Do this every day. Then increase your time in the chair. Hey, falling asleep is OK! Your body is telling you something. Put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth to center yourself and to concentrate.

Listen twice as much as you talk	There is an old saying that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Why is this an important change in your life this year? Your answers will be twice as wise when you actually hear what is being said and you think before you answer. I challenge you to really listen.

Say Thank-you	We sometimes do this without thinking about what we are doing; it’s like the trite sayings of the 70’s “Have a nice day”….. When you are about to say these very precious words – STOP – look the person in the eyes and extend your hand and then say Thank-you. Then look at the reaction of the person. Let go of the person’s hand when they let go. How do you feel now?

Find C-A-L-M This is different than your other two challenges. Have you ever felt out of control inside and maybe even your hand is slightly trembling? That is being out of control and trying to do too many things. Again I challenge you to close your eyes and focus on just doing that one thing and then proceed calmly to the next, focus, complete and then move on.

One Minute times two	In 2009 I gave myself a personal challenge to read in several books that are personally important to me each and every day for a certain amount of time. I would give myself an 85% on maintaining that wonderful routine. Here’s a challenge for you; each day read just 1 minute in an inspirational book ( this could be the Holy book of your faith, or a book of inspiration) and then read 1 minute in a text of your chosen field (not on the internet…this leads to surfing and distraction). Disconnect and sit down and read. Before you know it, you may be up to 30+ minutes!

Small Steps	Look back over this past year and think of the times when you felt that you were “behind” or “off track”; got it? This is a true sign of biting off too big a piece of the whole. Step back and take a smaller bite. If you are still in the same place….step back again and take a smaller step. Once you get to the point that you are succeeding; you are at the right pace for your time, and talent.

Sleep On It	I am a big believer in saying “NO” when I am not equipted to say “YES”. Recently, I was awakened to a new possibility. When you are asked to take on something or to do something, instead of jumping right in with your answer; try this: say: “….Thanks so much for asking. Let me sleep on it and I will get back to you….” So, you get off the hook in the moment. Sleep on it for a day or two or more if it is a big request, but do get back to the person or organization. When you do this even your “NO” will be received in a different manner.

I am grateful to know each and every one of you that reads this peice. My prayer for you in 2010 is that where ever your path leads that you are blessed, that you give thanks for everything that you have and comes your way, that you would lift up and support others who do not have your gifts, time and talent.

Life is good and God has showered blessing down upon me, my husband and our family this past year. We are blessed.

Janice Bastani
As we are well into the "Holiday" season, I am beginning to hear about the "fracture" of the mood, the attitude, and the anticipation of a bleak New Year. As I begin to wind down my own business for the year, I am very upbeat and joyful about all the newness and new possiblities out there for 2010, however, my clients, neighbors, friends, and people I meet on my travels all seem to be more uptight and pesimistic than ever. That my friend is "catabolic".

Did you know it takes more than 75% of your personal energy just to keep yourself in this negative, pessimistic place? Think about it! It costs you dearly just to maintain this posture of being a negatiave, bah-hum-bug type of person.

When you come into a room, your place of business, a party, your home or when you are out with friends, and you come with this negative catabolic state of being, what do you think happens to the room you come into? You actually deplete the positive energy in the room.

How can you change your energy from negative to positive?

The question is: Do you really want to change? What we do not realize is that when we stay in this space of negatiavity, we are getting something out of it. I know that sounds strange, but you are.

So what are you getting out of being negative?

Are you a self fulfilling prophesy?

What would make you happy?

What would happen if you just forgot all this other stuff and did what made you happy instead?

Let's look at that....

You might actually make some people mad at you.

You might disappoint someone.

You might create the space for others to actually enjoy their celebration by not being present.

You might actually have a great holiday on your own terms.

You might relieve all of your stress by not doing what you do not like to do.

You might realize that you are behaving the way you do in order to make like miserable for someone specific.

You might understand that it is not the holiday at all that puts you in this funk.

What else might you experience or think?

Being "Catabolic" is actually a choice you have to make. Yes, it might be your own default, but it is your default by choice.

You have the power to be Negative and you have the power to be Positive. Where ever you are it is now your perfect moment to choose another path. It will cost you 75% of your energy.

You can decide to depleat your energy by 75%.

Or

You can decide to drive up your energy by 75% by being Positive!

Which one do you choose?

Janice Bastani
I once knew a person who became very ill just after Halloween at just the thought of the holidays coming up in several months. This person's mental attitude changed, their body posture changed and they went into "hiding". At that time in my life, I didn't understand this behavior. Although I saw this person every day and our children played together, I didn't get it.

Many decades later, I now understand how and perhaps why this happened. I must admit that I did not know what an "unmet expectation" was or anything about how our mind has a negative self playing loop and that shutting yourself inside your home as well as your mind will magnify the whole issue.

I once asked a group of kindergarteners what they liked about the holidays and what they each answered was amazing. These children celebrated several different religious and cultural celebrations during the month of December. Their answers were very simple. It wasn't all the trimmings, food, presents, or stuff; it was usually just one thing that they loved and that was all they needed to feel "fulfilled" (my terminology not theirs).

I encourage you to ask what is the most meaningful to each of your family members and do that thing. Do not forget yourself. If you have family members who "love it all"....I encourage you to get that person to be in the trenches with you and to help fulfill their wishes. You may find that once they find out how much work it is they will scale back their expectations.

Whose rules are you following for this elaborate celebration?
What is the most important thing you want to celebrate?

Feel free to lay down and walk away from those things that no longer bring joy, or that you and your family have outgrown. If you have a grown up family, perhaps you might want to start a whole new tradition which is age appropriate.

When you celebrate what you truly enjoy and has meaning for you, your "celebration tank" (your inner self) will be full so much faster!

Instead of making dozens and dozens of treats...may only the one that you truly love, and teach each member of your family how to help and make their favorite. I love fruit cake...I know yuck!....but, I can get by and be satitisfied with just one of those small bricks from the grocery store. I need about three small pieces over the holiday to feel satisfied.

If you and your family want to have complete rest....and restoration during these long winter nights...make that your gift. Give yourself the gift of rest and restoration.... A crockpot full of soup, and a favorite movie and hot bath and bed in soft warm covers is very healthy.

Turn off the noise, the drama and the distraction of the media buzzing all around you and your family and focus on the positive.
